In Malaysia, there are three types of senior managed facilities:

  • Government welfare senior care facilities (government funded and managed)
  • NGO and charitable care facilities (self funded through donations and managed)
  • Privately run care facilities (self funded and managed)

It has been said that in Malaysia, ‘for every one registered care facility, there are two unregistered and one unknown’.

Registration

Before looking for care facilities, check that the one you are considering is registered with the relevant authorities.

Under the Private Healthcare Facilities and Service Act (1998), overseen by the Ministry of Health Malaysia, nursing care facilities must adhere to a high level of professional care and oversight. Centres falling under this category generally provide a high level of acute care and medical assistance to its residents.

Under the Care Centres Act (1993), elderly care homes must be registered with the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development. These facilities are designed for residents who require a low level of medical care. There is currently no definitive list of registered care homes, day-care centres or specialist centres accessible at the time of writing.

There are currently no guidelines to ensure elderly care homes under this category adhere to a specific set of best practice criteria. This may change with the introduction of the proposed Aged Healthcare Act which is scheduled to be tabled in Parliament in the third quarter of 2017. The Aged Healthcare Act aims to elevate standards of elderly care in Malaysia.
